With the long time goal of seeing Ghana and on the inspiration of a cherished professor, Asha Boakye-Yiadom, finally made the move in 2013. Since moving, she’s created a successful education non-profit and made plans to see as many countries on the continent as she can.

Coming to Africa was a decision that I made when I was a little girl. It just so happened that I had a professor who taught African politics at Oberlin College who planted the seed to live in Ghana. Pro. Saaka said in a class lecture one day…”Ghana is the next up and coming country in Africa. If you want to live in Africa. …choose Ghana.” I did and haven’t regretted the move yet.

I’ve been here for three years. Since moving to Ghana I have been working on my NGO, Sekelaga Educational Resource. I specifically develop programs and activities that offer alternative methods to education. I also invite aspiring teachers to Ghana in the summer for two weeks to teach any subject or art to Ghanaian students.

I personally have learned many things about myself and the world since moving to Ghana. I suppose the most pressing lesson that I’ve learned thus far is, no matter how much you read, talk and ponder, the world is so much bigger than you can ever truly imagine. Nothing beats actually seeing and experiencing the world for yourself. It will literally change your life. Since I have decided to make Ghana my new home I’ve decided to tour as many countries in Africa as possible.
